Q&A
Question: Is this behavior normal for a dog that has just been neutered?
( Back )
Answer #1:
My two male dogs were neutered at the same time. One bounced back like it was nothing and the other had bleeding, swelling, and was miserable for a few days. A lot of the lethargy can be from the anesthetic, which can take a few days to wear off.
It is normal, but I would keep a close eye on it. If the bleeding becomes excessive or if he doesn't seem better in a few days then take them back in. Also, make sure to keep their collars on so they don't lick the area. Licking can rip stitches and can cause infection.

Answer #2:
Yes, pretty normal. Glad to hear he's on cephalexin. If he was neutered at an adult or full grown size its pretty common to see some bleeding. My oldest dog wasn't neutered until he was full grown bc we got him from a shelter and he was black and blue from the surgery for almost 2 weeks. If you're worried, you can try laying him down on his back and gently dabbing the stitches with some hydrogen peroxide on a piece of gauze to help fight off any bacteria on the outside. Baby him and restrict his exersize for a few days to allow him to re-coop.
